There's an interesting reversal in Il Grido, the dark, mist-laden film (a.k.a. The Outcry) from director Michelangelo Antonioni: A lovelorn mechanic (Steve Cochran) undertakes an odyssey of discovery and desperation when his mistress (Alida Valli) falls for another man. He travels from village to village in the wintry Po Valley with his little daughter, looking up an old girlfriend (Betsy Blair) and then finding himself in the arms of a prostitute (Lyn Shaw) before finally giving in to his despair. Relentless, and for the strong of heart only.
