Back at Your Ass for the Nine-4 (1994)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Lead Performance: 2 Live Crew; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

While one hesitates to use the word visionary, this group, with its puerile obsession with sex, set to a bass-heavy, seemingly unattended drum machine, not only beat the censors in our nation's highest court but has proved to have lasting commercial appeal. Considering the various ''Whoot, There It Is'' spin-offs, the 2 Live Crew can also claim to have spawned a legion of imitators. Musically, Back at Your Ass for the Nine-4 is an improvement over past efforts, but it sticks to the basic formula: sexist, sloppy, and silly. B-
