The Best of Wynonie Harris

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Wynonie Harris; Genres: R&B, Reissues

In the late '40s and early '50s, big-voiced blues shouter Wynonie Harris was a black R&B star, virtually unknown to the white community. One Caucasian youth who was listening, however, was Elvis Presley, who introduced ''Good Rockin' Tonight'' to middle America six years after Harris recorded it. Harris didn't always get the quality of material or promotion that he deserved, but The Best of Wynonie Harris (along with other early R&B hits Rhino is reissuing) is an invaluable reminder of rock's black roots.
