Madder Rose Panic On (Atlantic) These New Yorkers traffic in the sort of retrofitted pop that bands like the Sundays and the Primitives failed to make exciting. But they beat the pants off those Brits in the songwriting department. Post-Dinosaur Jr guitars provide the requisite sonic grit, while non-grunge instruments (violin, organ, vibes) add a refreshing dimension. Singer Mary Lorson's gorgeously plaintive voice is the icing on a very tasty cake. A- -Tom Sinclair
