Details Lead Performance: The Fireman

Always willing to exploit a trend, the ever-facile Paul McCartney (with a producer named Youth) goes techno under a cutesy pseudonym. Macca has a feel for the genre's basics — the vacuum-cleaner-on-acid drone, Ping-Pongy bass lines, the occasional disembodied screech — but the music on strawberries oceans ships forest lacks the warp-speed intensity and surge of the real stuff. Leave it to McCartney to devise the first techno for elevators. C+
