Soundgarden may have to retitle its fourth and latest album: The granddaddies of grunge are apparently quite well known, following the lead of younger Seattle acts Nirvana and Pearl Jam by debuting atop the pop charts. Long relegated to name checks in cover stories about those bands, Soundgarden looks to have ridden buzz to the top; the demand for Superunknown has been building for 10 years, with a heavy prerelease publicity campaign finally bursting the underground bubble. Equally if not more impressive is the debut at No. 2 of fellow Lollapalooza vets Nine Inch Nails, a cult band with almost no label hype. Last Weeks on Week Pop Albums Chart
