Lead Performance: Bob Woodruff; Genre: Country/Bluegrass

New Yorker Bob Woodruff is supposed to be the missing link between down-and-dirty honky-tonk and slick mainstream country, a performer more into music than marketing. In truth, he's a fantasy Dwight-cum-Dylan who writes mostly mediocre songs. Woodruff finds a different path around a melody, and his lyrics will mystify most Nashville tunesmiths. But thematically, he can't disguise a cliche on Dreams & Saturday Nights. One song, ''Caroline,'' mentions Mama, Jesus, trains, drinking, and dying. What, no prisons? B-
