Deep Six (1994)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genres: Reissues, Rock

First released on the tiny C/Z label in 1985, this compilation, Deep Six, shows how arty punks gave birth to Seattle grunge by imitating early-70's metal. Green River (which later provided personnel for Pearl Jam) and a youthful Soundgarden grind out some dynamic but incoherent slime. The other bands here steal from Black Sabbath and Stooges songs, but groan with only half their teen spirit. B
