Hoist (1994)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Lead Performance: Phish; Genre: Rock

With its kooky lyrics, musical flashiness, and boogie- fied tunes on Hoist, Phish sounds like some ungodly hybrid of Frank Zappa and the Marshall Tucker Band. Devotees swear these bozos make up the best live band on the planet, but the truly wonderful thing about Phish is the way they make you appreciate other bands, like, oh, Mudhoney. If punk had never happened, you can bet more rock records would suffer from this sort of overly eclectic pretentiousness. C
