Athens, Ga.'s Five-Eight gives free rein on Weirdo (Sky/Ichiban) to its quirkiness and sensitivity on songs like ''Behead Myself'' and shares an aesthetic stance with New York wiseacres Too Much Joy: Both are crunchy-guitar bands with a pop undertow and wackily iconoclastic worldview. But Five-Eight lacks the Joy boys' knack for super-catchy songs with fabulously witty lyrics. The result is fair-to-middling college rock. B-
