Movie Review

Brainscan (1994)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Rated: R; Genres: Horror, Mystery and Thriller, Sci-fi and Fantasy; With: Edward Furlong and Frank Langella

A cyberspace horror show so logy it makes the crummiest Nightmare on Elm Street sequel look like Psycho. A teenager (Edward Furlong) addicted to blood-spattering virtual-reality games gets hold of the latest CD-ROM mindblower, which allows him to enter the consciousness of a homicidal slasher. Despite the lurid premise, Brainscan offers zero in the way of sick thrills. Worst of all is the Trickster (T. Ryder Smith), the movie's foppish Pinhead/Freddy Krueger wannabe. With his cut-rate warlock finery, rubbery makeup job, and veddy scaddy pronouncements (''Unleash the dark side of your soul!''), he has all the demonic charm of a pitchman for a costume shop. D
