An Actor's Revenge (1979)

Details Rated: Unrated; Genre: Foreign Language; With: Fujiko Yamamoto and Kazuo Hasegawa

In An Actor's Revenge, his 300th film, Japanese star Kazuo Hasegawa is extraordinary in a dual role as a burglar and a Kabuki-troupe female impersonator bent on avenging his father's ruin. Director Kon Ichikawa works wonders with wide-screen images (which are preserved here in the letterbox format), including some scenes of dazzling swordplay. The Kabuki star's thoughts and feelings are projected visually as, in and out of drag, he meticulously masterminds his enemies' undoing. And while this actor's revenge may not be swift, it certainly is seductive.
