This brave and often visually arresting film, infused with a modern sensibility, attempts to capture the uniquely ingenuous tone and bounding spirit of Virginia Woolf's picaresque novella. The preternaturally beauteous and androgynous Tilda Swinton is enchanting as the dandyish and ageless hero who lives 400 years and changes gender midway through. Readers of the book certainly have an advantage, but the concept could be tough going for those coming to it fresh by watching Orlando on video.
