There used to be an unwritten law in the horror genre against the explicit infliction of pain on children or animals. Well, the children part went out the window a long time ago, and in this charmer, we get to see a nice dog's awful death throes and the subsequent removal of a giant tick from its stomach. Icky doesn't begin to describe it. Of course, given Ticks' older-than-Gilgamesh kids-at-camp-menaced-by-mutated-creatures plotline, the filmmakers had to come up with something, um, fresh.
