Tale of Hoffman

What's in the works -- Dustin Hoffman, Cher, and the ''Smoke'' actors made headlines the week of May 27, 1994

Planning: Dustin Hoffman shifts into thriller mode in Outbreakas an ex-Army colonel who tries to prevent a deadly virus from spreading. Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) will direct.

Prepping: Infomercial fixture Cher is ready to tackle her first big role since 1990's Mermaids. In the black comedy Faithful, she falls for a hit man (Chazz Palminteri) hired by her husband (tentatively Ryan O'Neal) to do her in. Palminteri wrote the script, and Paul Mazursky's set to direct.

Shooting: Where there's Smoke, there's Harvey Keitel, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker, Stockard Channing, and Ashley Judd as Brooklynites whose lives become dramatically entwined. Being filmed in New York City by director Wayne Wang from Paul Auster's screenplay, Smoke can be inhaled early next year.
