Sort of an MTV Unplugged without the noxious industry overtones, the collection Rare on Air Vol. 1, recorded at NPR's flagship station in Santa Monica, features pretentious wounded-hearts (e.g., Natalie Merchant) yet finds a truly edgy intimacy with Tori Amos, Evan Dando, and X. Plus, Beck and Nick Cave redeem their self- mocking bluesman shtick with inspired lyricism. A-
