New Order Story, the chronicle of one of Britain's most inventive postpunk bands is, by turns, intriguingly absorbing and mind-bogglingly pretentious. Of course, it can't be easy summing up a band that can deem ''the kiss of death'' the ''perfect kiss'' one minute and write 1990's official World Cup theme for England's soccer team the next. Though cut to an hour from a longer British version, this tape demonstrates that, at every phase of New Order's existence, its videos-17 of which are showcased here-have been groundbreaking. B+
