In his prime, Jolson was widely considered ''the world's greatest entertainer.'' So it's good that Columbia is reissuing some of his earliest recordings, even if the producers haven't done him justice in terms of repertoire (omitting No. 1 hits like ''You Made Me Love You'' and ''I've Got My Captain Working for Me Now''), audio restoration (which lacks his warmth), or liner notes (which miss his strengths). And his greatest recordings, made for The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again soundtracks still await reissue.
