One of the most important (and refreshing) composers on the current jazz scene, alto saxist Henry Threadgill has ignored prevailing trends towards the neoconservatism of young lions like Wynton Marsalis to seek a way of his own on his new album Song Out of My Trees. His musicians are also free-spirited, interweaving independent lines to create music so liberating that playing this album should make any home feel bigger. A-
