The Woman's Boat (1994)

Details Lead Performance: Toni Childs; Genre: World

Trailing David Byrne and Peter Gabriel into the world-beat woods, Toni Childs tosses her guttural bawl on top of tribal bleatings by members of Euro-African a cappella combo Zap Mama, creating a musical saga of birth, life, death, and rebirth entitled The Woman's Boat. Childs' lightbulb clicked on during a trip through India, and she shares the experience like a traveler with too many vacation slides. Still, absorbing the faithful re-creation of that country's amorphous musical form becomes a tedious endurance exercise. Maybe you had to be there. C
