After a lackluster stretch earlier this year, Dream On bounces back with a witty two-part season-opener, ''The Taking of Pablum 1-2-3,'' in which Martin Tupper (Brian Benben) is accused of kidnapping his ex-wife's baby, the son of the rarely seen and now deceased humanitarian Dr. Richard Stone. The true culprits, it turns out, are frustrated-screenwriter siblings (Jami Gertz and Scott Bakula) hoping to peddle a ripped-from-the-headlines TV movie.

Dream's sharp parody of tabloid America features left-field cameos by Maury Povich, Daisy Fuentes, and Mary Lou Retton, but its true casting coup is lining up ex-Hill Street Bluesmen Taurean Blacque, Joe Spano, Michael Warren, Charles Haid, and Bruce Weitz to play the cops investigating the case. Blues' Betty Thomas won an Emmy last year for directing a Dream episode, and these two, directed by Stephen Engel, are almost up to that level. B+
