Grumpy Old Men

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Details Movie Rated: PG-13; Genre: Comedy; With: Ann-Margret, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau

Putting a grumpy spin on their old odd-couple act, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau play neighbors whose lifelong feud escalates when they vie for the new widow on the block (Ann-Margret) in Grumpy Old Men. Their stiff-jointed slapstick (including a flailing fight on a frozen pond) is only mildly amusing, though the chemistry still works when the boys stick to verbal sparring. Gradually, however, the movie's tone shifts from curt and curmudgeonly to soft and sincere: By the time Lemmon recovers from a Christmas Eve coronary, the fellows have become happy old friends. They were more fun as enemies. B-
