Sugar Hill (1994)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Movie Rated: R; Genres: Action/Adventure, Mystery and Thriller; With: Khandi Alexander and Wesley Snipes

Just when Harlem drug lord Wesley Snipes decides to quit the business, his loose-cannon brother (Michael Wright) drags him right back in. Director Leon Ichaso somberly charts the brothers' fates in Sugar Hill, punctuating his stately pace with shocking bursts of violence and equally arresting moments of visual poetry — like the image of a kid in his Knicks T-shirt who dies smiling, having taken a bullet for the dope dealer he idolizes. Ichaso only misfires at the very end, when he aims for both tragedy and redemption, and literally overshoots. B+
