If Hollywood has added a patina of glamour to the Mob of decades ago — Warren Beatty as Bugsy Siegel, Robert De Niro as Al Capone, Marlon Brando as the fictional Don Vito Corleone — Loyalty and Betrayal: The Story of the American Mob, a companion to the Fox TV special airing in July, does nothing to mask the murderers and their grisly violence. There are blood and guts, photos of the players, and elegant accompanying essays by New York Daily News columnist Sidney Zion. Mob won't necessarily lead you to a better understanding of the workings of the underworld, but it drives home its horror. B+
