Chic, daring French comedies have a history of being turned into smutty, clueless Hollywood farces, but one wonders how chic My Father, The Hero was to begin with. Gerard Depardieu resembles a glazed side of beef as a hapless Gallic dad who takes his teenage American daughter to the Bahamas, where she convinces everyone that the two of them are actually lovers (she wants to make a hunky busboy jealous). There's also a cameo by a certain Oscar-winning Englishwoman who will no doubt be leaving this one off her resume. Unfortunately, the daughter, as played by Katherine Heigl, is such a self-centered, scheming, mean-spirited twit that it's simply impossible to find her as charming as dear old Dad seems to. The movie's one honest laugh comes when Depardieu unintentionally clears a hotel dining room by playing ''Thank Heaven for Little Girls'' on the piano. There — I just saved you $2.49. D+
