Hood Winked

The ''Cheers'' star's new series gets turned down by his old network

Maybe one ex-Cheers star is all NBC can handle. After much enthusiasm about Under the Hood, a pilot starring George Wendt, the network has given the 11-year Cheers veteran and his new show the pink slip. ''They never spoke to me,'' said the show's executive producer Peter Tolan, who produced The Larry Sanders Show. ''I think NBC was looking for something more gushy, more family. They were not the greatest people to be involved with.'' Nevertheless, Hood, with some retooling, will air: CBS has picked up the show for 13 episodes.
