Lead Performance: Everything but the Girl
B+
Programming executives at VH-1 are probably clearing a place for the very catchy, pleasant, sentiment-soaked pop product known as Everything but the Girl. The girl, Tracey Thorn, effectively uses her voice (a nice blend of Sinead O'Connor and Carly Simon) to express despondence when she sings, ''I miss you/Like the deserts miss the rain.'' But the tepid jazzy orchestration puts Amplified Heart in danger of landing in the bins marked ''cheesy make-out records.'' B+
