The Sun Rises in the East (1994)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Jeru The Damaja; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

The Brooklyn rapper Jeru the Damja deserves all the props he's been getting for pyrotechnic wordplay. But the real star on this debut is producer DJ Premier (Gang Starr), who crams the 10 tracks on The Sun Rises in the East with sparse, rumbling beats and treble-y samples. Unfortunately, for all of Jeru's rapping talent, his lyrics aren't at all challenging or memorable. B
