Lead Performance: Kansas
B
The running joke among '70s Kansas haters was that the dust in the wind was really dust between their ears. But what this two-disc self-titled set shows is that they rocked their silly cosmic-quest lyrics with both majesty and hooks. These corn-fed mid-Americans could get ridiculously pompous: One suite lasts 16 minutes. But ''Loner'' and ''People of the South Wind'' hide punk and disco tricks amidst classical crescendos, and ''Dust in the Wind'' will always have one of art-rock's all-time beautiful guitar lines. B
