Roger Donaldson's over-the-top remake of a Sam Peckinpah crime flick that wasn't so hot to begin with died in theaters, probably because nobody could believe that characters as seriously gorgeous as Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger would make career choices involving safecracking. But this new wide-screen laserdisc version of The Getaway with one additional minute of restored breast-nuzzling and sexual acrobatics has proved to be an unexpected hit, despite the fact that on the small screen the picture's myriad implausibilities are far less easy to ignore. So what does this prove? If you give people a chance to see celebrities groping each other, the world will beat a path to your door. C-
