Quentin Tarantino's eagerly awaited Pulp Fiction (due Oct. 7) hardly needs extra hype. The thriller, which took top prize at Cannes, has already become famous as the movie expected to revive John Travolta's career. Still, Miramax took a unique approach to unveiling the trailer in July: advertising it. The company began running the trailer with the writer-director's 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs-rereleased in New York and L.A.-and heralded the promo's arrival in newspaper ads for the movie. ''We wanted the trailer to have its own 'preview,''' says David Dinerstein, Miramax's VP of marketing. ''We knew we had a built-in audience of Tarantino fans, who should be the first to see the trailer to his new film.'' And for everyone else? The Pulp Fiction trailer ''opened'' nationally this month.
