As the summer box office pennant race entered its final innings, the baseball strike was good news for theater owners: Instead of entering its traditional August slump, movie attendance remained solid-with idle baseball fans turning out for Clear and Present Danger, still firmly rooted in first place, and the indefatigable Forrest Gump, back in second place. Debuting on just three screens, Corrina, Corrina, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta, posted a promising $18,112-per-theater average, positioning itself for a run at end-of- season-sleeper status. And, in a move to boost earnings even higher, Disney announced it will pull The Lion King from the lineup on Sept. 23 and rerelease it at Thanksgiving.
