Lead Performance: James Carter Quartet; Genre: Jazz
A-
The promise shown by 25- year-old saxist Carter in brief but head-turning solos with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra has been more than fulfilled in this exceptional debut. From the cocksure title track, to the aching-with-longing ''Hour of Parting,'' the album overflows with life. Despite some overwrought moments (as on ''Blues for a Nomadic Princess''), Carter's swaggering mix of traditional and avant-garde styles compels interest.
