It's easy being Green Day right now: Bolstered by a hysterical, oft- programmed video for their new single, ''Basket Case,'' and an opening slot on the Lollapalooza '94 tour, the Bay Area punk trio gate-crashes the pop top 10 for the first time with their nearly seven-month-old Warner debut, Dookie. Look for lead singer (and Joe Strummer clone) Billie Joe and mates to continue to win new converts over the next couple of weeks as well. The band's chaotic set at Woodstock '94 sparked a flurry of mainstream-media coverage, and Lollapalooza continues to crisscross the country until Sept. 5. Punk is dead; long live punk.
