Writer-director-star Tim Robbins' pseudo-documentary on the rise of a billionaire right-wing folk singer (Bob Dylan meets Ross Perot) was probably a brave gesture in the age of Rush Limbaugh, but it's not very good. Despite the clever premise and some sensational acting, Bob Roberts is less a movie than an extended lecture. This laserdisc version's supplements are similarly a mixed bag. On the one hand, it has some deleted scenes and the 1986 Saturday Night Live sketch in which Robbins introduced Roberts. On the other, Robbins' second-audio-channel commentary offers little beyond the usual so-and-so-did-a-heck-of-a-job platitudes. Apparently, making the movie left him with little else to say.
