Campus Cool: Win Friends! Influence People!

With our handy, foolproof 1994 guide to campus cool

Attaining coolness in college is actually a less daunting task than it seems. For one thing, everyone outside the ivory tower already assumes you're cool, so all you need to do is convince those around you.

Easier said than done, of course. We could lighten your load by providing a few orientation week do's and don'ts. But then, saying that something is cool is the fastest way to make it uncool.

Which, of course, means that we have just rendered everyone on the next seven pages uncool. And one could argue that college radio staple J Mascis has overused his slacker shtick, that the prank-calling Jerky Boys are selling out by doffing their disguises in favor of movie stardom, that underground comics like Tank Girl are going mainstream, and that Quentin Tarantino is a hair from being a state-of-the-art media darling.

Then again, the true mark of cool is not caring about whether you are or aren't. Which is what we meant to say in the first place.
