Seventies disaster movies, my father used to tell me, are like tuna fish either you like 'em or you don't. I do, and so I'm glad to have Earthquake finally available in this beautiful new wide-screen laserdisc edition. From its C-list supporting cast to its tin-eared script, this depiction of the Big One hitting Los Angeles is as campy a showbiz artifact as you're likely to ever find. But the impressive-for-their-time special effects hold up; the highly touted Sensurround tremors remain impressive if you have a decent home theater setup; and there's even a bit of uncharacteristic-for-the-genre gore. They really don't make 'em like this anymore.
