Movie Review

Timecop (1994)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Rated: R; With: Jean-Claude Van Damme

You know another stone-faced martial-arts star (in this case, surly Jean-Claude Van Damme) is desperate to score a crossover hit when he's surrounded by a sci-fi plot that has him time-warping between 1994 and a slightly more advanced 2004, where the prime innovation appears to be that the automobiles look like giant freezers. In action scenes that are smashed to MTV fragments, Van Damme battles a U.S. senator (Ron Silver) out to raid the past for funds so that he can buy the presidency through TV advertising. The plot is more confusing than clever, and the only actor who seems to be having any fun is Silver, who's at his best throwing masochistic hissy fits at his younger, not-quite-so-evil self. C
