Sam & Max Hit The Road (LucasArts, CD-ROM for PC/Windows, $55.95) Sam's a dog- eared canine detective, Max is his mildly psychotic bunny sidekick, and, as the latter says, ''Together we savagely protect the rights of innocents.'' Like many other animated adventure games, Sam & Max urges the player to solve a mystery by picking up, talking to, or smacking around whatever can be clicked upon. What makes the difference is a genuinely funny script that retains the jaded whimsy of Steve Purcell's original comic books. B+
