Timing was clearly on Jean-Claude Van Damme's side as Timecop became not only his first movie to hit No. 1, besting his previous opening weekend ($10.1 million for last year's Hard Target), but also the third-biggest September debut ever (1991's Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, at $13 million, and 1993's The Good Son, at $12.5 million, are the top two). Time will tell, however, since such action fare tends to lose steam quickly (Hard Target lost 50 percent in its second week). Of the more limited premieres, Robert Redford's critically hailed Quiz Show, at only 27 venues, had the weekend's largest per-screen average.
