When a mysterious young woman (Phoebe Cates) appears in 19th-century England, the townspeople can't decide whether to hang her as a vagrant or celebrate her as royalty. Although the plot of this fact-based fairy tale wears thin, the cast -- including Stephen Rea as a journalist, Kevin Kline as a butler, and John Lithgow as a professor -- rises above the material and makes a strong case for the movie's premise: Act like someone special, and people just might believe you are.
