'Real' Life Support

The Real World has invaded The Real World. Pedro Zamora, 22, the HIV-positive cast member on MTV's reality show, suffered a brain infection during a recent promotional stint in New York City. Because Zamora has no health insurance, MTV picked up the tab for his two-week hospital stay in New York. Says a network spokeswoman, ''We're trying to do right by Pedro,'' who has been transferred to a hospital in his hometown, Miami. ''Without insurance, what's going to happen to him? It's pretty scary.''

Meanwhile, fans and friends have showered the young Cuban with cards, flowers, and donations to a trust fund set up by Body Positive, a Florida AIDS resource center.

''The support has been incredible—it's overwhelming,'' says Zamora's real-life roommate Alex Escarano. ''The other day some children made him a poster and a get-well video. He just lit up.''
