Ever since his debut, 1989's sterling Killin' Time, this superstar has had little to say, and what he has said has been buried beneath opaque phrases and tuneless rhythms. This fifth album is no different. Black hints at complex issues, but backs off for safer territory. Releasing an album of almost all filler is one way of separating himself from the posse of young contenders. C+
