Manic-depressive Johnston's unaffected songs lyrically straddle the touching and the creepy. Thankfully, his eccentricities-spare production, wavering pitch, erratic phrasing-have made the major-label transfer practically intact, only better recorded. Just pray they don't market him as rock's Forrest Gump.
