You know novelist/cop Gene Ralston (Scott Glenn) is living in a fantasy world when his gorgeous neighbor (Lara Flynn Boyle) even gives him a second look, let alone beds down with this craggy-faced father figure. And since Boyle plays what's probably the first woman who doesn't laugh uncontrollably at his preposterous tough-guy pickup lines, Ralston is understandably upset when she is violently murdered then the authorities start claiming she never existed. Past Tense's bizarre plotting might have become defiantly entertaining if Glenn had marched through it all with Clint Eastwood cool instead of Elmer Fudd bafflement, but everything eventually crumbles into a messy pile of flashbacks that get more predictable with every new twist.
