One way to get back at people is to tell them how good Golden Gate is. Dillon, all three facial expressions (happy, sad, and blank) at the ready, plays an FBI agent who, after framing and jailing a Chinese man (who later commits suicide), falls in love with his daughter (Chen). When the dead man's spirit literally overtakes Dillon, it's clear that a touch of magic realism might have helped this relentlessly humorless film, scripted by David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), avoid the hopelessly dull harangue on prejudice it becomes.
