A Winning Streep

This week's box office numbers

Though Meryl Streep muscled her way to the top of the pack in her ride-the-rapids thriller, The River Wild, she failed to establish a new personal best. River's $10.2 million opening fell short of Streep's best-ever debut, the $12.1 million that her special-effects comedy Death Becomes Her scored in '92. And with an audience older and more female than the traditional young- male action crowd, River lagged behind such recent fare as Timecop, which opened three weeks ago at $12.1 million. Still, she swamped the competition: While the African-American love story Jason's Lyric took in a decent $5.1 million, the baseball comedy The Scout struck out with $1.5 million, the box office equivalent of a Bronx cheer.
