As Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon (1994, New Line) steams to a close, a shipboard New Year's Eve dance drops a bundle of questions. In this passion- roiled flick-think An American in Paris meets 91 2 Weeks meets What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?-the undercurrent of violence and sexual frustration makes you wonder: Will repressed Nigel sleep with voluptuous Mimi, wife of paraplegic Oscar? Will Nigel's embittered wife, Fiona, lash out at her husband? Will someone end up dead? In all this excitement, you just might ignore the most obvious queries: Why is that guy on stage playing the saxophone when the song on the soundtrack is a synth-pop remake of ''Never Can Say Goodbye''? And why wasn't there any attempt to sync the music to the lounge band's antics?
