Love, Still Unlimited

Barry White's Tips D'Amour

Suddenly, Barry White is big again. With a toasty new single (''Practice What You Preach,'' from the Icon Is Love album) and his trademark crushed-velvet voice, the 50-year-old arbiter of amour is steaming up Billboard's pop chart for the first time in 16 years. He's also been busy fine-tuning an autobiography, and he recently lent a lung to Edie Brickell on her latest album. Still, White managed to spare a few moments to share his expertise.

*Barbra said love was softer than an easy chair. Is it? It can be. Love is a transparent emotion. Whether it's gay life, whether it's straight life. I don't give a f---. If the two of you want it to be beautiful, soft as an easy chair, elusive as a beautiful dove or butterfly, then it can be.

*What can we teach our children about love? The glory of love is showing it. Love isn't just a word, action, or emotion. You have to execute that emotion! Love is the icon of Barry White.

*Really? What makes you so special in that area — the voice? No. You can talk high or low, it doesn't make any difference. To speak truth, that is the difference. To be honest, to communicate, to listen — those are a few of Barry White's attributes.

*Do you agree with Maureen McGovern that there has to be a morning after? No. There can be, but it depends on what the night before was.

*Do you believe love makes the world go round? There would be no world to go around without love. That baby wouldn't even exist if there was no getting off!

*Both figuratively and literally, huh? That's right!

*Man, you're really into this. Yes! Just think: Without making love, there's no people or society. There's nothing to talk about. There are no telephones.

*On ''I Only Want to Be With You,'' you claim that you ''can't make the love that's only for a minute.'' That's what I am! I'm not the type of guy who f---s around with ''Wham! Bam! Thank you, ma'am!'' When I'm making love, I don't like rushing. It can be 45 minutes or an hour. Baby, I only want to be with you.

*Do you take vitamins? I've never taken a vitamin in my life.
