Implacably serious and maddeningly eclectic, Dead Can Dance create music as airless and pretentious as only a band that titles a song ''Piece for Solo Flute'' can. Lisa Gerrard has a pretty, supple voice, and the band manages to create a listenable Middle Eastern groove, but Toward the Within is mostly a dull, plodding affair. C-
